Secondly, we organized a mountain hiking trip in order to become acquainted with the problems of the forest caused by natural disasters and anthropogenic actions. The hiking trip was in Etropole Balkan Mountain, where we saw the horrible consequences of the freezing and falling of forest trees in our area several years ago. Among the fallen trees, the Roma students clearly realized the scope and consequences of this disaster. The trainer described in detail the reasons for this disaster. All of us discussed other factors which have had detrimental effects on forests – forest fires, landslides, insect pests, fungal diseases etc. A special emphasis was placed on the negative human activity – the illegal cutting of trees. The trainer explained in detail activities carried out by the forest estate for removing the caused damages. Everyone agreed that this is a very suitable way for low-qualified Roma from mountain areas of the country to earn their living.
